Land cover data generated up to five months ahead of USDA Cropland Data Layer with AI-driven computer vision methodology
MINNEAPOLIS, October 31, 2024 – CIBO Technologies, the climate software company for agriculture, today announced the release of the CIBO Crop ID dataset, which identifies cropland cover across the continental U.S. for the 2024 crop year.
CIBO’s computer vision methodology leverages advanced AI and machine learning algorithms and satellite imagery to provide comprehensive crop detection at a greater resolution and up to five months ahead of the USDA’s well-known and respected Cropland Data Layer (CDL). While the CDL is a valuable resource for understanding the agricultural landscape of the previous crop year, CIBO offers timely crop cover insights during the fall harvest season, enabling in-season analysis ahead of the USDA’s CDL release in early 2025.
This earlier availability is crucial for companies seeking to make informed decisions regarding planning, compliance, and supply chain management. The Crop ID dataset features 131 land use labels that encompass a diverse range of plant cover, from commodities such as corn, soy, cotton and wheat to specialty crops and forest cover. Verified against independent field data, CIBO’s model has historically outperformed the CDL in accurately identifying top U.S. commodities.
The potential applications of this dataset are wide-reaching. Businesses preparing for the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)—which mandates that commodities such as soy and corn be sourced from deforestation-free supply chains—can rely on CIBO Crop ID as an independent data source for compliance validation. CIBO has identified crop cover going back to 2017, enabling businesses to effectively track and compare their sourcing regions over time. Additionally, organizations with net-zero targets benefit from the earlier availability of cash crop data combined with CIBO’s greenhouse gas modeling, enabling them to plan their supply chain interventions with greater foresight.
CIBO Crop ID is accessible via API and downloadable raster files, with the possibility for customized delivery formats to meet customer needs. Users of CIBO Impact will find the 2024 CIBO-sensed cash crop data seamlessly integrated into their field practice history, simplifying program prequalification and minimizing manual data entry.
“The release of this year’s CIBO Crop ID exemplifies our commitment to advancing agricultural technology,” said Marie Coffin, VP of Science and Modeling at CIBO. “By harnessing our innovative computer vision methodology, we’re equipping the industry with a vital resource that enhances both planning efficiency and sustainability efforts.”
The annual release of the Crop ID dataset enhances CIBO’s computer vision services for field-level and large-scale analysis of conservation practices. The technology producing this dataset is designed to be geographically scalable, laying the foundation for CIBO to support and promote regenerative agriculture beyond the U.S.
